My high school English teacher had a large, handmade banner hanging on our classroom wall. It was a modest banner, constructed from perforated rows of white printer paper. Despite its lack of flash, I adored that banner because it posed to me, in bold, clear letters, the most haunting question I had ever been asked: How do you live an extraordinary life?

I first read that banner over a decade ago, and I have been obsessed with its question, and others like it, ever since. What does it mean to live an extraordinary life? How can a person escape confining status quo to create a life that is vivid and unique? If there are countless paths to remarkable living, how is a girl to choose which one is right for her?

I revisit these questions nearly every day in my work, in my play, in my dreams. I hope that when I am wrinkled and shrunken and gray, I will look back at my uncertain youthful self with love and a chuckle. I hope then I will know some answers.
